About the Workshop and Imago

Imago Couple's Workshops were created by Harville Hendrix after years of extensive studies about relationships and are now offered in twenty countries around the world. It is experiential and educational and often compared to 3-6 months of weekly couples’ therapy. The workshop is not a quick fix, but a journey. It will give you a better understanding of your relationship, and you will learn practical skills to deepen your connection.

When we are young children, we have in our mind’s eye an image of who we want for a partner based on our childhood experiences. This image is unconscious and is part of how we choose our mates or the people we date. Often people notice they select partners with similar characteristics. This is our IMAGO, which is an unconscious agenda from childhood. When we make the agenda conscious and work with our hurts, hopes, and disappointments in relationship, we heal and deepen in our relationships.

You will each have a workbook that helps you explore your particular family history. Through this work and exercises with your partner, you develop an understanding of what drew you to one another, what is underneath the conflicts and sticking points in your relationship, and what you can do to resolve them.

We discuss how relationships often start off in the romantic stage. The next natural progression is the power struggle phase, a normal stage in a relationship when we see things differently. The Imago perspective is that such conflict is an opportunity for growth, change, and mutual healing. There are important clues in these disagreements that can be used to transform your relationship, provided you can discuss these things in a positive and respectful way.

For this reason, the Imago dialogue and other tools are taught and practiced during the workshop. The intent is to create a safe place where you can share your feelings with one another and feel more comfortable to be yourself. A lot of the work is done on your own, and no one is expected to “air their dirty laundry.” When couples do voluntarily share in the group, it is often inspiring and relatable for many others. Confidentiality is emphasized throughout the weekend.

By the end of the workshop, you will leave with a variety of tools you can use to help your relationship, as well as more compassion and understanding for yourselves and one another.
